The Day Tripper visa is for people who want a short visa to enter the country. It is ideal for the guy (or gal) who wants to hop over the border to spend some time at Victoria Falls (on the Zimbabwe side). A Day Tripper visa is issued at the port of entry and will give you up to 24 hours to stay in the country.
Not everyone though, qualifies for a Day Tripper Visa. If you are on this list, you are going to need to apply for a visa at your Embassy or Consulate, which will require a referral.
