French Polynesia is an overseas territory of France. If you are a citizen of a country on this list (If you are not on that list and are going for tourism or business purposes, there is no need to get a visa before you travel), you still must get a separate visa for French Polynesia for tourism or business purposes (A Schengen visa will not let you in French Polynesia).
What this means is that, if you are, for example, traveling through Europe and then onward to French Polynesia, you are going to need to get BOTH a Schengen visa and a special visa for French Polynesia.
