Knowing when and where to file your taxes is something that is difficult to understand in any country, but when you’re a foreigner in a different land, such as Greece, these processes tend to be time consuming and frustrating.
There are a wide variety of essential things you need to know before delving into your taxes, but one of the most important is that of the tax authority in Greece. The main tax authority, the portion of the government that collects your taxes, is the General Secretariat for Information Systems, also known as GSIS.
There are a few rules that state when a foreigner would be subject to income taxes in Greece. If you reside in Greece for more than 183 days out of the year, then you will need to pay income taxes. The one exception to this rule is that, as Greece taxes you on your worldwide income, if you acquire the majority of your income in a country that has not signed a Double Taxation Treaty with Greece, then you will not be subject to income taxes except for the first three years in which you live in Greece for more than 183 days during the year.
Knowing when exactly you need to turn in your income tax returns is of utmost importance, and can result in penalties if you do not file by this date. For Greece, the deadline for filing you income tax return is anytime between March 1 and May 31. The exact filing date will depend on the last digit of your Greek tax number.
There are a few ways for you to file your income tax returns, such as sending it through the mail or filing electronically on the GSIS website. You can pay your taxes by sending a check to GSIS or with a debit/credit card on their website.
