How To Find a Job in the United States as a Foreigner

By far, the two best places to look for jobs in the United States if you’re just getting started with your job search are Indeed and LinkedIn. I’ve had the most success using those two websites.

If you’re a foreigner, I recommend you search specifically for jobs that indicate that visa sponsorship is available. In the search blank in Indeed, for example, you can type “visa sponsorship” and see what results you get.

Even though Indeed and LinkedIn are the kings as far as job search is concerned, it is still worthwhile to go through the sites below as you might find some hidden gems.

Below is a selection of resources for searching for employment opportunities as a foreigner. I’ll kick off this list with Indeed.com, the job site that I’ve had the most success with.

General Job Search Engines and Classifieds

With the sites below, you can expect to get a 0.5 to 1.0% response rate (people who will respond back to you to whom you sent your application/CV.) Nevertheless, I encourage you to give these sites a try as you never know what you will come up with or what connections you can make from a simple e-mail or application.

• Indeed: Big U.S. job search site. This is the best place to begin your search.
• Glassdoor: Glassdoor has a slew of opportunities across the United States.
• GoAbroad.com: A good site that contains information about international programs and jobs for students interested in traveling abroad.
• Learn4Good: I’ve seen job opportunities on this site that would fall under the J1 visa program. If you are not familiar with it, the J-1 visa offers cultural and educational exchange opportunities in the United States through a variety of programs overseen by the U.S. State Department.
• Simply Hired: Yet another job search engine like the rest of them.
• Career Builder: Another popular job search site in a crowded field.
• USA Jobs: Work for Uncle Sam.
• Craigslist: A giant classifieds site. The king of kings.
• Dice: The best site for tech jobs.
• Randstad: Staffing services.

Other Websites and Blogs

• Just Landed: Just Landed has a good guide to finding a job in the US.
• Guidelines for Foreigner Nationals: Alison writes detailed instructions for foreigners seeking employment in the U.S.

Overseas and Expat Job Portals

• eFinancialCareers: My favorite search engine for finance jobs on the web. I used them during my Wall Street days.
• LinkedIn: Last but not least, this huge professional social network is a resource for building contacts in the field and location of your interest.
