Guinea-Bissau doesn’t have a consulate or embassy in either the United States or the United Kingdom. In fact, in 2007, the Embassy of Guinea-Bissau completed suspended operations. To add insult to injury, in order to get a visa for Guinea-Bissau, you have to either go to Lisbon, Portugal and get it the same day (expensive option) or go to Ziguinchor, Senegal and get it at the Guinea-Bissau Consulate there (recommended option).
Below I will tell you all you need to know about how to get a Guinea-Bissau Tourist Visa the recommended way by travelling through the town of Ziguinchor, Senegal (also called Zinguinchor).
- Visa required for U.S. citizens before you go to Guinea-Bissau: Yes.
- Visa required for non-U.S. citizens: Yes, visas are required for all visitors except for ECOWAS member nation citizens
- Go to my Guinea-Bissau visa page for information on other types of visas for Guinea-Bissau.
Book a ticket to Dakar, Senegal (U.S. citizens don’t need to get a visa ahead of time to get in)
After you are in Dakar, book a ticket to Ziguinchor, Senegal
- You need to book a ticket to Ziguinchor, Senegal via Senegal Airlines
Have someone drive you over to the Guinea-Bissau Consulate in the tiny town of Ziguinchor. It is pretty easy to find. You should see a little sign out front that says “Consulat General de La Republique de la Guinee-Bissau Pour Les Regions de Zinguinchor”
Congratulations! The Consulate of Guinea-Bissau will give to you your brand new Guinea-Bissau visa.
- Processing at the Ziguinchor Consulate takes about 10 minutes.
Don’t get sick! Check vaccination requirements here.
