Iraq Visa General Information and Eligibility
- Visa required for U.S. citizens before you go to Iraq: Yes.
- However, if you just want to go to Iraq as a tourist (to say that you have been!), just do what I did and book a flight to Erbil, Iraq in the Kurdistan Region.
- The Sheraton Hotel in Erbil has the BEST barbecued chicken I’ve EVER tasted! For this, you do not need to arrange a visa before you arrive. When you land at the airport, you will be given a free stamp (good for a stay of 10 days).
- If you want to go to regions of Iraq outside of Kurdistan, that will be a whole other animal and will be an incredibly tedious process.
- Visa required for non-U.S. citizens:
- As is the case with U.S. Citizens, if you are a citizen of the European Union, Canada, Japan, or Australia and are travelling to the relatively safe Kurdistan Region in northern Iraq, you can get a free stamp on arrival (good for a stay of 10 days). All other nationalities will need to get the Kurdistan visa on arrival.
- For anyone who wants to go to any region in Iraq outside of the Kurdistan Region, that is an entirely different process. You will need to go through both your embassy/consulate in tandem with the Iraq Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
