How to Get a Tourist Visa for Mexico Step by Step (FMM)

Mexico Tourist Visa

Mexico Tourist Visa

The Yucatan awaits you!  Here’s how to get a tourist visa for your visit to Mexico.  Go to my Mexico visa page for information about other types of visas for Mexico.

All foreigners wishing to enter Mexico must fill out an FMM.

1
Do you need a visa?

For those people from countries who do not need pre-approved visas (e.g. the United States), you can fill out the entry form (called the “Formato Basico”) at any port of entry. If this is the case, you’re done!

2
Need a Visa? Find your consulate.

For those people from countries who need pre-approved visas, click here to find the website of the closest consulate to you.

3
Find the visa applications.

Normally, after you land on the consulate page, there will be a link on the left-hand side that says “Visas,” “Visa for Mexico”, or “Visas for Foreign Nationals.” Find that link and click it.

4
Find the Tourist visa application.

Look for a link that says “Tourist Visa” or “Visa Categories” (then find the Tourist Visa link) and click on it.

5
Gather documentation.

Gather the required documents.

  • Note that the required documents will vary from consulate to consulate.
  • The Mexican government gives the individual consular offices a lot of leeway on what they can ask for.
6
Apply for the visa.

In most situations, probably because there are so many Mexican consulates in the United States and around the world, you will need to apply in person.

7
Wait until you receive the visa.

Your new Mexico visa will be ready shortly.  The time period will vary from consulate to consulate.  Congratulations!  Enjoy your trip!
