South Africa has a TON of different types of visas and permits. Having lived and worked in Johannesburg, I can tell you that the process for getting a visa or any other type of permit for that matter is bureaucratic as you would expect but not too bad, especially in comparison to other countries in this part of the world. The key is to just make sure you have all your paperwork (all your ducks in a row as we say in the United States), and you should be fine.
There are a number of different types of visitor visas for South Africa. It will all depend on your purpose of stay:
- Tourism (or “Holiday” as South Africans like to call it)
- Business
- Attending conferences
- Study purposes not exceeding three months
- Medical treatment not exceeding three months
- Academic sabbatical
- Voluntary or charitable activities; and research
